In the fall of 2019, Ian was completing his tour of the exhibition hall at UVic’s Clubs and Course Union Day. Preparing to leave, a final table caught his eye, remarkable only for being so bland in its decoration. Approaching in skeptical curiosity, he was greeted by Eric with an enthusiastic account of how food might be grown in the city and shared democratically among participants.

Having grown up around gardens and presently feeling their absence as a new apartment dweller, Ian was intrigued. He began meeting on weekends with Eric and company, soon to be called Curbside Farms, and developed designs for garden beds, watering systems, and other elements needed to bring the original vision to life.

Ian studied computer science at BCIT, SFU, and UVic, and has a background in software engineering. In his spare time, he produces experimental music and tinkers with designs for collaborative reasoning software, leaving a trail of scattered notes on his blog which is dedicated to the subject.
